Southbourne Bowls Club is a mixed club with a current membership of forty men and twenty ladies. It is one of the few clubs in West Sussex to have an outdoor all weather surface providing one green of six rinks which are available for use for the whole year. The green officially opens mid April and normally enjoys uninterrupted play until closure in late September. During the close season the Club also provides winter bowling under our Polar Bears membership. Although a small club in terms of membership, Southbourne has enjoyed it's share of County and National successes. Recent initiatives have been very successful at attracting both newcomers and experienced bowlers to the club, however, Southbourne still has plenty of capacity for new members and would be more than pleased to welcome you should you be looking for a change or new challenge. The Bowls Club offers a full range of bowling for both the competitive and social bowler. These include County and Club matches, internal competitions and leagues, Friendly fixtures, Roll-ups and Winter Bowling, details of which can be found below.
County and National Competitions. Individuals may enter the full range of
competitions offered by the County and National governing bodies. The club
also enter a selection of the team events available. These provide competition
for the more experienced bowler and gives opportunity for all players to
test their abilities at the highest level. Progress in these competitions
can also give rise to opportunities at County representative level.
Littlehampton Gazette League. This expanding league is currently supported by
over twenty clubs from West Sussex. Split into three divisions, it probably provides
the most competitive men's club bowls in the west of the county. This is a men only
league with games played on four rinks with home and away fixtures during
the course of the season.
Reflex League. This mixed league, competed for by clubs in the Havant and Waterlooville districts of Hampshire, is a triples league played on five rinks with home and away fixtures. This format provides competitive bowls for all club members and is particularly popular with couples who can enjoy their bowls together.
BML. Another mixed league that the club compete in is the BML. Unlike the Reflex, this two triples league is competed for by clubs in West Sussex and gives opportunity to players who may not regularly play in other leagues.
Hotham Tens. This competition run by Hotham B.C. is a team event consisting of a Single, Pair, Triple and Four split home and away. Team selection is open to both Ladies and Gentleman members. The competition is played on a knockout basis with the final being played at Waterloo Square.
Club Competitions. A large selection of Men's, Ladies and mixed competitions are competed for annually. Most formats of the game are covered including Singles, Two Wood Singles, 2 and 4 wood Pairs and a Pairs League. The club have also introduced additional competitions that cater for our more senior bowler and our members new to the game.
Club Friendly Fixtures. A full season of friendly fixtures are available for those members who enjoy a social game of bowls in good company. These popular fixtures will introduce newer bowlers to the game as well as take them on their travels to clubs in the surrounding area.
Winter Bowling. Known
as the 'Polar Bears' our winter bowling members enjoy regular get
togethers during the colder months of the year. Enjoyable social bowling
is the name of the game with an annual dinner to round of the season
before Spring arrives. |
