Short Mat Bowls.
Southbourne reached their first WSCSMBA final yesterday when the
team of A Bull, R Armstrong, D Alner & R Bull reached the final of
the Charity Fours competition to finish runners-up to a combined
Martlets / Slinfold Infinity team.
Progress at County level combined with a well supported club program
has firmly established Short Mat bowling at Southbourne and leads
the way for entry into the County league next year.
This highly successful and enjoyable debut season comes to a finish
next weekend with both County and Club Singles being staged.

SBC Short Mat league.
With three rounds left to play, D Walter holds a narrow lead at the
top of the men's section with 24 points from R Armstrong with 23
points. In the ladies section, AW Bull on 17 points has a 3 point
lead over K Alner on 14 points.
The next round of the short mat league is scheduled for Sunday 20th
February at 2pm. All SBC members are invited to join.

Southbourne's progress in the Short mat discipline of Bowls took
another step forward on Saturday 29th February when R Armstrong and
D Alner reached the last sixteen of the County Pairs held at
Westergate.
Qualifying from the Group stage as undefeated winners they were
eliminated in the first knockout round by C Rolph and M Lancaster, the
current champions.
Congratulations to Chris and Marc who continued through to win the
competition and retain the trophy.

Southbourne Bowls Club held their annual dinner and presentation
night at Southbourne Club on Friday 28th January.
Congratulations to Club Secretary Dave Young and the Bowls committee for
their hard work in
organising the evening. All at Southbourne would like to thank
Karen, Sam and Wendy for the excellent meal and Paul Simpson for the
lively entertainment. Trophies and prizes were presented by club

Southbourne's Short Mat league got off to a successful start today
with Round 1 being contested by 13 players.
This league is open to all Southbourne Bowls Club members and will
be played over a series of nine rounds.
Attendance at each round is not necessary, although playing more
rounds increases your chances of success.
Any SBC member wishing to compete in this league can join at any of
the scheduled rounds; the next being on Sunday 14th November at 2pm.
Short Mat information can currently be viewed on-line via the
Noticeboard page.

Southbourne Bowls Club have now been approved for affiliation to the
West Sussex County Short Mat Bowling Association (W.S.C.S.M.B.A) and
to the English Short Mat Bowling Association (ESMBA).
Two short mat sessions will be held during the winter months, these
being Tuesday evening from 7pm till 10pm and Sunday afternoons from
2pm till 6pm.
The Tuesday session will continue as an informal roll up whilst the
Sunday session will introduce some competitive club competitions and
allow for future County league fixtures.
A timetable of planned short mat events is now available on the
Noticeboard page.
All members are welcome to attend. |

Yet another highly successful season of club competitions came to
a conclusion yesterday when Southbourne B.C. held it's Finals Day.
Despite the inclement weather, those who were able to come along and
give support were rewarded with some excellent bowling.
Congratulations to all finalists, both winners and runners-up.
Many thanks must be extended to both the officials on the green and
to the volunteer caterers off the green, who all assisted in making
the day a success.
Thanks also to club shirt sponsors, the Beijing Palace restaurant,
who once again supplied a first class meal to conclude the day.

Southbourne Bowls Club are pleased to announce that it's Short Mat
Bowling sessions will continue for this coming Winter 2010/11.
As well as the existing Tuesday evening Roll ups from 7pm till 10pm,
the club will be introducing a Sunday session from 2pm till 6pm.
This will commence on Sunday 3rd October. This first session will be
used to establish the opinions of our members as to the future of
this format of the game at Southbourne Bowls Club. All members are
welcome.
It is intended that the first few Sunday sessions will be run as an
'Open Mat' format and later, if interest is sufficient, to run some
club competitions and fixtures.
Full affiliation to West Sussex County Short Mat Bowling Association
could follow, allowing County and National competition entries etc.
League teams could then follow in 2011/12.
This pilot scheme is seen as yet another avenue of growth and
enables us to offer a complete year of bowling for members of
Southbourne Bowls Club.
So, come along and give it a try!

Club Pairs League with a commanding 59 points. A keenly contested second
place goes to R. Armstrong and first year bowler P. Jasinski with
51 points.
Well done to all teams for their contribution in making this

Club Finals Day 2010.
The Order Of Play for this years Finals Day has now been completed
and has been displayed in the clubhouse foyer.
All finalists and officials are requested to note the start times of
their respective games and allow sufficient preparation time for the
game to start promptly.
A last call for anybody wishing to add their name to the list for
the Finals Day Supper. This list will close early on Sunday 29th
August. I suggest Saturday will be your last opportunity.

The popular winter bowling at Southbourne
B.C. is to start again on the 11th October. This scheme is open to
bowlers from all surrounding clubs and offers an alternative to
indoor bowling. Non Bowlers are also welcome. Full membership at
Southbourne Bowls Club is not necessary.

On Saturday 7 August Southbourne Bowls Club had a very
successful party to celebrate its 90th Anniversary with nearly
200 hundred invited bowlers and their friends from various local
clubs attending.
The party started with a friendly “roll up” on the green. The
evening then continued with dancing to the music of Paul
Simpson, a generous buffet supper and a Grand Raffle. The
culmination of the evening was the cutting of the Anniversary
Cake by the longest serving member of the Club, Charlie Soper
who has been bowling with the Club since 1952.

Southbourne Bowls Club celebrated their 90th anniversary today
alongside invited guests from all spheres of the clubs bowling.
Two teams of past Southbourne players joined force with those
representing the S.C.B.A, Littlehampton Gazette league, Reflex
league and Friendlies, to play a six rink match against hosts
Southbourne. The fine Spring weather brought out the best in all
teams, resulting in close scores and excellent bowling.
Congratulations to all teams, especially the S.C.B.A team
(pictured) of L. Mockett, B. Alcoe, B. Napper & B. Lee who
were the top visitors rink and A. Bull, M. Soper, A.W. Bull &
S. Soper who were the top Southbourne rink. Many thanks to M.
Odell and R. Armstrong for their organisation, and to Chairman W.
Coates for his hosting of the day.
Southbourne B.C. would like to thank all guests for helping mark
this day of celebration. |

over fifteen pairs already subscribed for next season it is
advisable to add your interest ASAP as numbers may well have to be

As we edge closer to February, our attention will soon turn towards
the new outdoor bowls season and the challenges that will surely
bring.
2010 is a special year for Southbourne as we look forward to
celebrating our 90th year as a Bowls Club.
The committee has been working hard during the Winter months to
organise special events to help with these celebrations; more
details on these to follow.
The new club shirts have been ordered and will be with us for the
start of the season. They are to be presented by shirt sponsors 'The
Beijing Palace' at one of the special events.
As the weather improves, we once again ask for the support of
club members to assist in preparing the grounds and facilities for
this special 90th year season. Details of work parties, etc, will be
posted in the clubhouse. Please assist if you can.
